Ideal weather conditions across Queensland mean that all our favourite winter produce is ready. Head to a local farmer’s market this weekend to pick up some of the best locally grown fresh fruit and veggies.
If you’re trying to get ahead of the weekly shop and looking for some inspiration, check out some of this season’s best produce.
Now is the perfect time to get some fresh Queensland citrus.
Grapefruit has enjoyed an excellent season in Queensland and there has also been a consistent supply of limes coming down from Mareeba. These can be used to add flavour to a range of dishes, from soups to Mexican.
Victorian grown Imperial Mandarins are also in good supply, and a great source of Vitamin C to beat those winter sniffles.
Strawberries always perform well in Queensland during the colder months, and this year is no exception. Strawberries are perfect for desserts and as snacks as well.
Winter is also a good time to buy blueberries at a reasonable price. Why not whip up a batch of berry muffins?
As we come to the latter half of the season, it’s a great time to dig into broccoli, beans, brussels sprouts, and sweet potato, which are all in good supply in Queensland.
Pumpkins are also thriving in the colder weather, so enjoy pumpkin soup, mash and roasted pumpkin. Pair these veggies with a classic roast meal.
Winter Herbs & Spices
Warm up your winter by adding some Queensland grown chillies to your dish. They are in great supply and going cheap!
You can add chilli to almost any dish, from soup to curry. Locally grown coriander and continental parsley are selling well at the moment and can be used as a garnish for pasta dishes.
If you’re buying produce in bulk, you’ll want to make sure it maintains its freshness when you get to its destination. Brisk’s refrigerated truck rentals have a range of options for keeping your fresh produce cold and in top quality.
